Kundalini

Q: What’s the difference between Divine Energy within us and Divine Energy in the world around us?
A: Sacred Energy that is stored within the human being which, when awakened, begins to travel along the spine opening up the chakras (causing an expansion in awareness as these different centers open up) – that Energy in a human is called (in Sanskrit) Kundalini. There is also a stored Energy in the universe and this is called Maha Kundali. Kundal means coiled and so Kundali is the hidden energy at the heart of the whole universe and it’s called Maha which means great – Maha Kundali but in the individual that power inside of us that is a sleeping power is called Kundalini.

Q: How can I understand Kundalini when I’ve never experienced it?
A: If you don’t know about Kundalini I’m sure that during the 40 Days you’re going to learn much more because I’m just creating a perspective (a view, an overview) for people to see all the things that I’m going to speak about. The important thing here is to be able to see the larger view and then we’ll zero in on the smaller topics. And my interest is knowing, “How much of the larger view have you seen or are seeing?” That’s important for me – the relationship between these different levels – and how much aware you are of these different levels and their challenges. That’s what I’m very interested in seeing.

Consciousness

Q: What is Consciousness?
A: I'm always excited about exploring the Consciousness Field because it defines who we are and my experience tells me that I'm not a physical person. My experience tells me but my awareness now is not telling me. My awareness just “is.” My awareness is that I am not my physical body but rather that I am a conscious being. I feel myself as existing in a Consciousness Field, that I am Conscious Being and my Consciousness is what determines my existence or my Consciousness is what my Existence is and that everything that is happening to me is happening in my Consciousness.

My Consciousness is the baseline of everything that is happening to me. If I am interpreting you, then I am interpreting you in my Consciousness. If I am creating you, then I am creating you in my Consciousness. If I am creating a thought, I am creating it in my Consciousness. If I am willing something, I am doing it in my Consciousness, so my Consciousness is a baseline to my existence. Exploring that Consciousness Field for me is what has been the most fascinating aspect of my own spiritual journey. I found that my Consciousness just expanded – expanded from the idea that I am a physical being, that I am lonely, that I am separate...my Consciousness just expanded to a greater awareness of “who I am.” If I am to describe "who I am" I really don't know how to describe it.

Q: What’s the relationship between Energy and Consciousness?
A: Energy comes from Consciousness. Energy is an emergent entity that comes out of the Consciousness, that emerges from the Consciousness and it may dissolve again into the Consciousness. Everything in the universe is energy – even the physical world. It is all particles vibrating and when they disintegrate they go back into the void, which we call the Consciousness Field – so energy is held in Consciousness, it’s inside Consciousness, it’s a part of Consciousness, it is resident in the Consciousness. That’s why we say that Siva and Sakti are one. Sakti is really the Energy and Siva is really the Consciousness so Siva and Sakti are one. That’s a very simple explanation. In relationship to us it means that everything that comes out, everything that is manifest and visible and active, is actually coming from an invisible field – a field that (for want of a better word) we call the void, an invisible field. It is the Consciousness Field.

The Journey

Q: What is enlightenment?

A: “When we think of light, darkness also comes into the picture as light is the opposite of darkness and it is darkness that gives special beauty to light. When you see them in contrast it's just so beautiful. The light stands out in all its glory. The darkness defines the boundaries of the light and stands as the background. When you light a match in a dark room, the darkness is overwhelming and the light seems so feeble. But when you put the flame to a candle there is much more brightness and if we take that candle and light several others we soon have a room filled with resplendent light. There is such power in this light that it removes all fear, insecurity and loneliness created by the darkness in the room.

The process of Enlightenment is like this. It begins with a feeble flame of Grace within our dark inner world - a world filled with ignorance of our true Self; a world where misery, loneliness, fear and insecurity lurk at every turn; a world where happiness easily changes to sadness and pleasure into pain. Then the flame begins to grow when we protect it and feed it with fuel. Soon our entire being is filled with the light of our divine spirit or Self.

Enlightenment is being aware that we are spiritual beings in a human experience. It is feeling the power of our beautiful and mighty spirit, knowing that we are made in the image and likeness of God and that we are a drop in a vast ocean of divine consciousness. This process begins with the kindling of spiritual energy and the awakening of spiritual consciousness in us. This is the first sign that grace has begun to enter our lives. To receive this grace we have to open our hearts to it. We need to have a desire for enlightenment. We must have a desire for the light to enter into our lives. We must want to get rid of the darkness within.

Prayer, meditation and contemplation are ways of cultivating that desire for the light. Just when we are truly ready grace will enter as that little flame. It may come as a sudden realization whilst contemplating, meditating, praying, singing, dreaming or even whilst engaged in worldly activity as a response to our soul's longing for true happiness, peace, love and joy. It comes powerfully in the presence of enlightened beings. This first experience of light in our lives is a transforming experience. We are never the same again. A journey has begun to change our lives forever.

In mystical terms the Kundalini energy has been awakened from its sleep in the base chakra and begins its upward ascent. The process of enlightenment has begun. The spiritual energy within has been kindled. A tiny flame has been lit. As this energy moves up our spinal column each chakra it awakens adds to the light within. Our energy grows and consciousness expands. We feed the flame as we strengthen our desire for the light and by our spiritual discipline. Each time the flame grows stronger the light within gets brighter and the darkness recedes to the background. The negative emotions are transformed into positive ones. The light of each step provides brightness for the other.

The process of enlightenment ends when we realize that we are the Light. It is not in just seeing the light but becoming the light - merging into the light. This happens when the crown chakra is fully energized. The Higher Self or God determines when it happens in an individual. This is an act of Grace.”

Q: Why can’t I hold on to Divine Energy experiences when they come?
A: This means that your mind is pulling you away, that the mind is still influencing you powerfully, so you need to learn how to stay in the Observer and to be detached from the mind. Training the mind is a foundation discipline, a fundamental discipline. If you don’t learn how to train the mind, then it’s going to be difficult to advance. If you don’t learn the early stages of study, then it’s hard to study at the higher level so you need to accomplish the lower task. That’s why sometimes we want to become completely free but it begins with the simple of discipline of learning how to keep one thought in your mind. We need to cover the basic disciplines so every day taking time to learn how to manage your mind, to just sit quietly and just keep one thought in your mind. That’s a good discipline so that when the mind is controlled and you’re having deeper experiences, you can detach yourself from the moving mind.

The one that is observing is the ego. The one that is observing also has the power to think. When we are observing thoughts, thoughts are like the momentum of the mind, thoughts that come and go and the ego has no way of managing that but the same one who is observing is the same one who is managing. They’re the same ego. We just call them by different names: one is observer, one is thinker but they are the same – the ego in different roles. The Observer is not the mind. The Observer is somebody trying to control the mind. The Observer is the advanced part of your being with an advanced mind, a mind that is saying now, “I want to be the superior one here, not you guys,” so it’s really a higher part of you trying to control a lower part of you.

Q: How can I become more enlightened?
A: There is only so much you can do. If you want to go to a deeper level of consciousness or higher level of consciousness, you need to open up the spiritual centers (chakras) more, the energy body needs to be more activated. And that happens by discipline, by grace, by effort, by association, by commitment, by a lot of things…but awakening the consciousness, moving the consciousness to another level to be able to see more is goal. It’s not an easy process so at every stage you need to observe where you are in your consciousness, how much you can see.

And don’t frustrate yourself if you think you’re not seeing enough. Try to allow it unfold. When you put a seed into the ground, don’t frustrate yourself if it’s not growing as much as it should every day. Water it as much as you can, add fertilizer so that you can accelerate the growth but sit back, watch and enjoy and don’t get frustrated that the fruits are not coming up yet. That’s the process of trying to observe spiritual experiences. You work at them but if they’re not coming up right away, you look for where blocks are or weaknesses are in your process, work at them again and whatever results you get, be satisfied. That’s where you are. Be satisfied with the results but also willing to go further to experience more.

Q: How can we hold on to the Energy when we are engaged in ordinary activity?
A: Meditation allows you to open the doorways to the Higher Self (to the Source within you) and when the door is opened, even when you’re doing ordinary things, you are able to channel more. You’re opening up the inner doorways so that more Light can manifest in and through you to your world. That’s what meditation does. It opens up the spaces within you and leaves that connection to channel more energy to your world so, in a very natural way, if you are engaged in thinking or whatever you’re engaged in doing, you’re bringing the connection of that Infinite Space with you in whatever you are doing. That’s highly powerful. In meditation you open up the space and you keep that connection as you go into the world and whatever you are focused on, you bring that energy of that space into what you are doing. That’s the goal.

Tools of Self-Transformation

Q: What is Seva (Selfless Service) for?
A:  Let us reflect on the nature of selfless service and how important it is for our spiritual growth and development. The Sanskrit word used to describe this activity is ‘Seva’. In our lives we aspire to serve humanitarian organisations, spiritual masters and above all, our Creator. It is true to say that in serving humanity in any form whatsoever, we are serving God for He lives in the hearts of all. And He is most pleased when we serve His creation, recognising His Divine Presence therein.

We can serve the world in basically three ways as we are threefold in nature – body, mind and spirit. But the essential spirit of service is seeking nothing in return for what we do. It should be done out of love and for God. In return we get His countless blessings, which manifest in the most beautiful ways, improving our lives at every level.

At the physical level we may make material offerings in service. This is good, as it reminds us that we live in a material world and should contribute to its needs and development. Sometimes we go to spiritual institutions and 'enjoy' the Energy and togetherness that they provide, and completely neglect or overlook their material needs. It is a great blessing to serve such institutions that strive to create a better world through prayer and other spiritual activities.

Even getting involved in the physical activities pertaining to the upkeep of such places, brings great spiritual benefits. One can feel the cleansing effect on the mind even in such seemingly menial activities like sweeping, mopping or arranging seats.

I will never forget the time when I was in my Guru’s Ashram in India and I was given the task of cleaning all the garden toilets. I was a little disappointed with this task. Recognising this, a really great devotee from Australia came to me with lots of love and compassion and said, “This may seem the dirtiest seva but it will bring the greatest benefit. Just try it and you will see. I am happy whenever I am given this seva!” No task was too menial for me after that day! There is great joy in material service. It cleanses the mind and nourishes the heart.

On a mental level we can offer intellectual help to others to uplift them. We can teach others what we ourselves have learnt to create a more enlightened society. When we help others to become more aware and they in turn help others, blessings come our way from the great chain of influence we have created. Let us share what we know with others.

From a deeper perspective, let us send out positive thoughts to the world everyday, wishing for its upliftment at every level. Let us never send negative thoughts to the world as it will only contribute to greater negativity. When we think negatively, we add to the negative astral energy of the world, an energy that feeds negative and criminal minds.

Let us root out negative thoughts from our mind completely and feed only positive thoughts to the environment. This will neutralize or cancel the negative and strengthen the positive energy in our world. Let us participate positively in creating a better world. This is great service.

At the spiritual level, we can offer the greatest help to the world. If we can create spiritual awakening within others and encourage their spiritual development through our activities, we will create a powerful force of divine consciousness and love, which through its chain effect will create peace, love and harmony. We will experience countless blessings from God in such seva. Our lives will be filled with tremendous peace, love and divine security. Just to chant God’s name in the bus or train while we are travelling, or to offer spiritual counsel or advice to those in need is great seva.

In serving humanity or the spiritual masters in their divine missions, we really serve God. Spiritual masters say that we best serve them when we follow the teachings they impart and become like them, spreading divine love and knowledge to create a better world.

God

Q: What is God?
A: We’ve grown up with ideas about God and to be faced with new ideas can challenge the mind but it can also be exciting and it can also bring more awareness and perhaps greater experiences. For me it is wonderful that we can experience God in a different way that moves us away from fear and moves us away from reverence-without-true-understanding.

Ego

Q: What is our multi-dimensional being?
A: The Higher Self within us or the Self within us, or our individuality (let’s say our individuality is “self”), that individuality is experienced in multi-dimensionality: I have a physical self, I have an emotional self, I have a mental self, I have a spiritual self, I have a vital energy self, etc… If you take the seven chakras, you can say that each one of those is an aspect of the one Self – so each one of those is a “self.” And then if you connect with the Source, you can say, “I have a Cosmic Self. I have a Universal Self. I have a Higher Self. I have a Larger Self,” so everything, every aspect of our being is a self. Our multi-dimensional being means that we have different parts of us at different levels.

Q: How do we deal with the ego if it’s such an obstacle?
A: We have to keep this ego thing. This is going to stay with us right through the journey but you want to make sure to purify the ego, that the ego takes itself into a higher place. We are the ego but we can have a very pure ego, a very beautiful ego, a very spiritual ego or we can have a very selfish ego, very materialistic ego…so we need to transform the ego. And you transform the ego by striving to think better thoughts, more loving thoughts, to keep more loving feelings by associating with people who are more loving, “better”…and in these simple ways you can begin to transform the ego. Through self-discipline; through association; through spiritual activities…you can actually begin to transform the ego from the lower ego to the Higher Ego.

Guru

Q:  What is a Guru?
A: “The Guru is said to be the ‘grace bestowing power of God’. It is through the True Gurus or Sadgurus that God showers His divine blessings upon us, awakening us to the knowledge and experience of the Self within. I thank my Guru and all Gurus for being there when we needed them and for dedicating their lives to the spiritual upliftment of humanity. Without them our lives would be filled with darkness.”

“It is said that the Guru Principle in the Universe is the power of grace; that the Universe carries the power of grace. Throughout the Universe grace exists, and that is the power to liberate us.”

[Note:  Sri Vasudeva spent the entire 2008 40 Days Observance focusing on the concept of the "Guru".   He speaks of Guru in three contexts:  Inner Guru, Outer Guru and Cosmic Guru.  They are all different manifestations of the same principle.  The unliberated soul expresses Guru Consciousness (when the brow chakra is opened) in limitation whilst the liberated one (Sadguru, the one who is anchored in crown chakra consciousness) expresses it in fullness.]

Energy Transmission

Q: How can I connect with your energy field from a distance?
A: I am saying this to all the people who are looking at me from all different places in the world: You can be right here energetically even though you are physically placed somewhere else. That is a possibility. Especially if you have been here before, it makes it easy for you to tune into that but it doesn’t necessarily mean if you have not been here before that it’s going to be harder. You can also tune into the Energy here by giving attention to what you’re experiencing from the group, from the morning talks. Your soul will remember and you’ll begin to let these experiences to come within you and pull your soul back into activation or into the experiences that your soul knew. So if you find that you listen to these things and your soul begins to resonate, it is because your soul knew it before. Though you may not be physically here but your soul may have had similar kinds of experiences this can bring it into expression once again. Just being here at the Ashram, not having to go anywhere and to be absorbed in the energy of the Forty Days is beautiful but of course when you have to, when you can’t stay in a contained space, you can carry this with you if you carry the thoughts with you and you carry the feelings with you.

Philosophy

Q: What is the goal of life?
A: Understanding yourself is the ultimate goal because you’ll find the universe inside of you. If in going inside of you you begin to understand the universe, it means at the very core of your being, you are connected to the whole universe – so by going right within you, you’ll understand everything. That’s the beautiful secret. Your Self is the doorway to the whole universe.
